Hi, guys. I am a particle physicist and I have been doing some research on quantum wave fluctuations found in cucumbers. Anyway I do not want to bore you with all the details but I had this bet with a friend of mine about transdimensional portals and well, I sort of opened up a door to the forth level of the Stygian Abyss. Anyway these creatures are coming through and I could really use a science communicator to explain to these guys that the extra mass that they are adding to our universe could have a profound impact on us all. As I am sure you are all aware our universe very much depends on the law of conservation and this incursion of theirs could collapse our Universe into a puff of nothingness. I could be wrong of course and the damage might be localised only to our galaxy and the neighbouring Andromeda. Anyway, help would certainly be welcome.

See this is what happens when you have a public forum. It has taken the place of the toilet cubicle barrier or that blank wall that is just screaming for graffiti.

Well, said Edwina. What happened to the bottom of the barrel? I want to hear something about promiscuous university adventures. Back when I was studying we were more interested in the faculty challenge than to challenge the faculties.

It has been discovered that you are all relatives of the late King Mesinto of Budalaharia who has sired many offspring. Sadly, the King has recently passed away and it took us some time to track you down. You have been remembered generously in his will. In order to claim your inheritances please send us your bank accounts details so that we may transfer the money straight to you.

Hey guys, has anybody noticed the strange background in the radio transmission. It sounded a little bit creepy to me so I have run through a filter and have isolated three frequencies that are an exact match for the human delta waves. I think the Big Brother is watching.

I do not know much about science and I would very much like that to remain so. Please take your ivory tower talk elsewhere and leave the radio waves free for talk shows. The hard working hosts of those shows cannot compete with you guys. This invasion of intellectuals has gone too far. Where is a person to go if all they want is some brain-numbing entertainment? I remember the days when radio and TV did not require a degree to be understood but now it would seem that whole entertainment industry has been taken over but left-leaning liberal technocrats who have nothing better to do but to shove their science into our collective faces.

Bravo, bravo. It is so refreshing to hear intelligent interviews on the radio. While I do enjoy a bit of trash talk as much as the next chap, it is really rather unbecoming of a person of my stature. This talk of science is certainly a welcome change though I am worried that for the most plebs the subject matter will be difficult do digest. That may be for the best. We do not want the masses educated, running around with all sorts of liberal ideas. There is no need to repeat that ghastly mess we had in Russia a few years back.

Texas itself has become a very infamous place. Many people are under the impression that texans stand around all day shooting into the air. Of course it's quite possible that there right, I've never personally been there.

Anyway back to the subject at hand. If we really looked we could probably find a couple ways to replace or at least downsize the use of oil. But the bottom line is everyone is there too make money. I may just be rambling on like a crazy person, but why would you want too stop or downsize something your making a fortune off of? Does anybody in the oil industry even care that we need alternate fuel sources now?

An interesting comment, Jan... "unusually intelligent for someone with a background in the oil industry."

What do you imagine? It does take some intelligence to send a drillbit down 7 miles into rock at 350 degs F and 25000 psi, based on a model derived from a wide azimuth pre-stack depth migrated seismic data. Interpreting the elements of a hydrocarbon system, including analysis of structural timing, trap geometry, hydrocarbon generation and migration, and seal capacity is not a child's video game. Arranging and securing financing for a multi-billion dollar investment involving several joint venture partners and a host government takes a bit of smarts.

Where did you get the impression that people in the oil industry are not as intellectually gifted as those in your industry? This public perception of the oil industry really is curious.

Rod,

Fascinating podcast, and certainly a vital subject. Alaska, my home, gets ridiculous attention as having untapped reservoirs of oil. "Drill baby drill" may be the battle cry of our now-infamous governor, but is not the solution, in my humble opinion.

Surely wood could only help if harvested as a renewable resource, not as yet another clear-cutting problem.

I think your speaker is correct: we are close to peak oil, and I hope prices convince our government as well as others to pursue alternative safe fuels. Robert Rapier sounds unusually intelligent for someone with a background in the oil industry. Or, rather, has an open mind about the future of U.S. foreign policy.

Thanks.
